Huge Brooklyn Book Sale
This weekend is the 18th Annual Book Sale at the Park Slope United Methodist Church.  You can browse through thousands of books, DVDs, CDs, etc. - all for only $1.  If you’re feeling especially book worm-ish, you can spend an extra $10 and be one of the first to browse through the donated items, particularly popular Children’s Room, during the early bird hour.  Let us know what you get - it might be one of the books we donated earlier this week.

I had great plans for Presidents’ Day. Get a zipcar and go explore the Far Rockaways, or find a new wildlife reserve upstate to go hiking, or at least shoot birds in Jamaica Bay. And then it snowed again overnight and the sky looked like a milky curtain, with a forecast for drizzle later. So,…

Endless winters sometimes have their upside.

The good people at PLG Arts put up these murals on Lincoln outside the B/Q train, and they looked especially lovely in the snow.

series-of-contradictions:

Funny that this NY Times articles speaks to all the great musicians that live in our building and the adjoining one.  We constantly hear amazing jazz, sax, guitar wafting through the walls and courtyard.  We’re often so captured by how great these musicians are, we find ourselves frozen in motion, stopping to listen.  What is not funny is our downstairs neighbors are the only people in either building with no semblance of talent whatsoever but that doesn’t stop them from trying really loudly to convince us.

Although the photo doesn’t illustrate it, this house is actually in a sought after Brooklyn neighborhood (Lefferts Manor/Prospect Lefferts Gardens).  I’ve passed this house a number of times in the past three years, and watched as it sporadically goes on and off the market.
The story is that a doctor bought the house with the intent of turning it into his practice, but ran into the strict zoning regulations of PLG.  Before he got caught up in the red tape, he began a full gut renovation, and dug a ton of dirt out of the basement.  While I don’t know the true status of the renovation, the house has sat in this state for about five years.  For whatever reason, I have this keen obsession with this house’s eerie abandoned look.  I have some strange metal association with this house and the cover of Ariel Pink’s House Arrest, perhaps it is the amateur graffiti tags which now cover a large portion of the house.
Personally, I’d love to buy this house and transform it into something both beautiful and utilitarian.  It has a garage, courtyard, and, according to Property Shark, 3,758 sqft of living space.  (Just 1,242 shy of my goal of owning 5,000 sqft by the time I am 50)
Although it isn’t over the top beautiful, it is tremendously functional, and I if I were to win the Mega Millions Lotto Jackpot today, I’d totally jump on this house.  It has plenty of space for a victory garden, my future Alfa Romeo GTV, and a workshop for bicycles and furniture.
Despite it’s outstanding qualities and location, I feel the asking price is a bit high for a house that’s been in arrested development for nearly half a decade.  If it were $550k, it would be perfect, but $750 for what is believed to be an empty shell is a bit much.
Ugh, somebody bestow hundreds of thousands of dollars to me so that I can make this happen.

Brooklyn Edible Social Club, Ghetto Gourmet

theothericecreamman:

If you haven’t joined the Ghetto Gourmet yet… well, shame on you, what kind of foodie are you?

Upon moving to new york, one of the first things I did was attend a GG dinner party. I was 19, a little young and broke (and vegetarian) for a dinner party network, but I wasn’t hearing that. I showed up to a Tribecca loft, floor pillow and cheap wine in hand, and my foodie seed was watered and nurtured over conversation with complete strangers. I haven’t yet committed to any other networks, although I once went vegan and checked out the amazing and more affordable 4 Course Vegan. I’m more broke now than I was then, so if I had the money/wasn’t driving an ice cream truck this coming saturday night, I’d totally be at this event:
